Why we started Bright Path Learning

Over 20 years of classroom experience between us — and one shared belief: every child deserves access to outstanding teaching.

We launched Bright Path Learning in September 2024 because we believe every child deserves the best possible opportunity to thrive in their education. As two experienced science teachers, we had both worked with private tutees for years and seen first hand the transformative impact of great teaching.

But we kept running into the same problem. We were overbooked, and rising costs meant quality tuition was becoming inaccessible to many families. That realisation became our mission: build a platform that connects exceptional educators with students at a fair, accessible rate, so more young people can benefit from expert teaching.

Over the years we have had the privilege of working alongside extraordinary colleagues — dedicated curriculum leaders with deep subject expertise who simply do not have the time to manage their own tutoring arrangements. Bright Path Learning gives those teachers a platform to share what they know, and gives families a way to reach them.

We are equally committed to widening access by partnering with schools, because an inspiring teacher can be a genuine catalyst for social mobility. We are proud of every student we have supported so far — from aspiring teachers and doctors to dentists and accountants — and we look forward to working with many more.

What we stand for

Three principles that shape every tutor we work with and every session we run.

Subject specialists, not students

Every tutor on our platform is a qualified UK teacher or school leader with proven classroom experience — never a university student moonlighting between lectures.

Genuinely accessible

Fair pricing, small groups, and a free first session. We work with schools to extend access to families who would otherwise miss out on expert one-to-one or small-group tuition.

Built around how children learn

Recorded sessions to revisit, small groups capped at five, and teaching led by people who write the curriculum at their own schools. Tuition designed by educators, not platforms.

Two co-founders, two classrooms, one shared mission — to give every student access to the kind of teaching that changes how they see a subject.

Steve Butler, co-founder of Bright Path Learning and Head of Science

Steve Butler

Co-founder & Tutor

  • Head of Science
  • 10+ years teaching
  • OCR A A Level examiner
  • Specialist Leader of Education
  • Oxford-educated

Steve has spent over a decade teaching science across the 11-18 age range and currently leads a science department, where he shapes the curriculum and drives outcomes across GCSE and A Level. As an examiner for OCR A A Level science, he marks for the exam board itself — meaning he knows exactly what examiners reward and brings that insight into every session.

As a Specialist Leader of Education, Steve also coaches teachers across the wider region, sharing the practice that helps students cut through complex scientific ideas with confidence. Educated at the University of Oxford, he combines deep subject expertise with a forensic knowledge of exam boards and mark schemes.

“Small group teaching with experienced teachers is one of the most powerful interventions available. It has too often only been available to those who had the most. Bright Path Learning exists to change that — making the best teachers accessible to every family that wants them.”
Ollie Lomax, co-founder of Bright Path Learning and Assistant Head of Science

Ollie Lomax

Co-founder & Tutor

  • Assistant Head of Science
  • 9 years teaching
  • KS3, KS4 & KS5 lead
  • Teacher mentor
  • Proven exam results

Ollie is Assistant Head of Science at his school and has spent nine years teaching across the full 11-18 age range. He has held Teaching and Learning Responsibility (TLR) posts overseeing Key Stage 3, Key Stage 4 and Key Stage 5 science, giving him a rare view of how students progress from their first secondary lessons all the way through to A Level.

Alongside his teaching, Ollie mentors colleagues and leads subject knowledge development within science departments — the kind of work that quietly raises the standard of teaching across a whole team. Year after year, his own students achieve excellent exam results, and he is one of those teachers parents quietly recommend to each other. That, more than anything, is what sparked Bright Path Learning.

“Time and again I get the same message from parents: ‘do you know a good tutor for…’. Parents struggle to find excellent tutors for the core subjects, and at Bright Path Learning we are changing that. When we connect the right student with the right tutor, students thrive. That is what we are about — providing a brighter path for students’ learning.”

Frequently asked questions

A few things parents often want to know about who we are and how we work.

Who founded Bright Path Learning?

Steve Butler and Ollie Lomax founded Bright Path Learning together in September 2024. Two highly experienced UK teachers, they jointly lead the science department of a large secondary school, with combined specialisms across biology, chemistry and physics — the full breadth of school science between them.

Are your tutors qualified teachers?

Yes — every tutor on our platform is a qualified UK teacher or school leader with proven classroom experience. We deliberately do not work with university students, because experience in the classroom is what makes the biggest difference to a student’s progress.

How is Bright Path Learning different from other online tutoring providers in the UK?

Two things. First, our tutors are all current or recent UK school leaders and curriculum specialists — not generalists. Second, we keep group sizes small (capped at five) so every student gets meaningful attention. The first session is always free, so you can see if it is the right fit.

Where are Bright Path Learning tutors based?

All our tutors are UK-based qualified teachers, currently working in or leading departments in UK schools. Sessions are delivered online so students can learn from anywhere in the UK.
